Yves Montand (13 October 1921 – 9 November 1991) was born in Italy in October 1921. His family left for France in 1923 due to Italy’s fascist regime. He grew up in Marseille, where he worked at his sister's beauty salon. He began a career in show business as a music hall singer. In 1944, he was discovered by Édith Piaf in Paris, and she made him part of her act. He went on to international recognition as a singer and actor, starring in numerous films. In 1951, he married Simone Signoret, and they co-starred in several films throughout their careers. Montand died of a heart attack in November 1991 whilst working on his final film.
Duffy took this photograph during the 1966 Monaco Grand Prix for the Sunday Times Magazine, published on the 23rd of October 1966. It was during this event the John Frankenheimer film 'Grand Prix' was being filmed starring James Garner, Brian Bedford & Françoise Hardy.
