Vogue - September 1961

Shot in Florence in July 1961, Duffy took Marie Lise Gres and Celia Hammond to pose around the cities iconic landmarks. Using modern technology and the fact that much of the architecture of Florence is identical 50 years later we have located many of the areas in this session. This is particularly interesting for the archive as much of Duffy's session information was destroyed during his departure from photography.

The first page shows a cropped image of Marie Lise Gres on the Loggia Della Signoria. The full frame can be seen here.

The second pages show Celia Hammond at a newsstand on the left. Using the negative we identified the date the image was taken from the title on the newspapers. Due to the printing of the magazine, much of the background is missing from the image. A much more detailed version can be seen here.

On the right of this page, Marie Les Grise stands on the corner of Via Degli Strozzi in downtown Florence as a car drives past. The girl in the foreground is sat on the Palazzo Strozzi north wall. Fifty years later there was a Duffy Photo Exhibition held at the Alinari Photo Museum just a stone’s throw away from this spot.

The photograph of Marie Lise Gres in the wedding carriage is parked in front of the Monument to Garibaldi located on Lungarno Vespucci. On the right, although obscured by the model, the statue of Hercules strangling the Nemean Lion can be seen in the background.

As with most location sessions, only a few of the works were used for the final publication. Duffy also photographed Celia Hammond under the end of the Vasari Corridor. This structure runs along the Ponte Vecchio and along the riverbank connecting the Palazzo Vecchio with the Palazzo Pitti. See it here.
