
Tom Maschler (16 Aug 1933 - 15 Oct 2020) Jewish by birth, his family fled Nazi Vienna for the UK. He travelled widely and worked on a Kibbutz, and after his National Service, he started a career in publishing. One of his earliest successes was purchasing Joseph Heller's Catch-22 for £250. Maschler was one of the critical figures establishing the Booker Prize in the late 1960s.
