Peter Langan was born in Ireland in 1941. After moving to England in the early 1960s, Langan began his catering career, starting out at ‘Odin’s’ restaurant on 26 Devonshire St. After working his way up to take over the kitchen of the restaurant, Langan eventually purchased a share of the venue, transforming its decor and cuisine. This success allowed the venue to expand to a larger venue next door. This became so profitable that it allowed Langan to pursue his new venture ‘Langan’s Brasserie in Stratton St. Michael Caine, a regular customer and friend of Langan, became his business partner, and the restaurant opened on 20th October 1976. By the mid-1980s, it had become one of London's most fashionable venues for the likes of Elizabeth Taylor, Marlon Brando, Mick Jagger, Francis Bacon, Muhammad Ali, and Jack Nicholson. The restaurant’s walls are decorated by artists such as Lucian Freud, Francis Bacon, Gerald Moira, Patrick Procktor and David Hockney, who also designed the menu. Peter Langan, a notorious alcoholic, died on the 7th of December 1988 at the age of 47. The restaurant retained his name and continues to be a popular venue to date.
