Pablo Casals (b.29 Dec 1876 – 22 Oct 1973) was a Spanish cellist and composer. Born in Catalonia in 1876, Pablo Casals is widely regarded as one of the greatest cellists of all time.
Duffy photographed Casals shortly before his 96th birthday in Puerto Rico. The article was published in the Sunday Times Magazine on the 19th of November 1972.
In the article, Casals is described as a man of peace and has devoted his life to his belief in it. In 1938, he left Spain to protest against the Franco regime, never to return. Casals had been an important international figure on the music scene since his first big concert in Barcelona on August 5th, 1889, at age 12.
