During the same session in 1973 Duffy also shot a small selection of full-body images. Philip Castle then airbrushed this final image to turn Bowie into a metallic, alien, otherworldly figure. This image appears in the gatefold of the timeless 1973 album Aladdin Sane. Duffy's flash design can also be seen in the image background and on the lyric sleeve of the original record.

Taken by Duffy during the second of Five Sessions with David Bowie – Duffy’s most famous photograph dates from 1973 and is the iconic and revolutionary cover of David Bowie’s album – Aladdin Sane. A shot that became the defining look of Bowie’s long career, and has been referred to as the “Mona Lisa of pop.”

The defining image of Duffy and Bowie’s creative relationship which has become synonymous with the legacy of both artists. Tony Defries commissioned Duffy Design Concepts to create the entire Aladdin Sane album. The brief was simple – “Can you make it expensive?” The intention was to take Bowie to an international level. Also to make a bill so large that the record label would have to pay attention. A Dye-transfer image was the answer. A process that was notoriously costly, with the production taking place in Switzerland. Duffy carved the iconic red and blue “Flash” across David’s face in lipstick. The outline was then filled in by makeup artist Pierre Laroche. The image was then sent to airbrush artist Philip Castle. Duffy previously worked on the 1973 Pirelli Calendar with Castle who applied the water symbol on Bowie’s chest.

Open Edition Prints

Our Standard Archival Quality Pigment Ink Print is 7.5″x 5″ (19.05cm x 12.7cm) in 12″x12″ (30.48cm x 30.48cm) Mounts - handmade and printed in the Duffy Archive from the original photographic negatives.

All of our images are ready to frame, supplied with a choice of either a black or white acid-free mount. A mount is a paper-based border around framed images between the frame and the image. The mount adds an extra decorative element and also prevents the image from making contact with the glass. Our Standard Size open edition prints are the same size as a 12" vinyl album sleeve for convenient framing.

As with all our prints, each open edition is embossed with the Duffy Archive stamp. The reverse of each frame has a sticker detailing the history of the session and a hand-stamped logo from Duffy's old camera cases.
