John Mills (b.22 Feb1908 – 23 Apr 2005) was an English film, stage and TV actor who appeared in more than 120 films over 70 years. Mills was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1960 and in 1976 he was knighted by the Queen. He won numerous awards for his acting roles and at 91 years of age, Mills became the oldest joining member of the entertainment charitable fraternity, the Grand Order of Water Rats.
This image was taken by Duffy during pre-production for the film 'Oh! What a Lovely War' (1969) to which Duffy purchased the rights after seeing the original play which Len Deighton & Duffy later produced. John Mills starred as Field-Marshal Sir Douglas Haig in the feature. Previously Mills had starred in 'The Family Way' (1966) for which George Martin & Paul McCartney recorded an award-winning soundtrack which Duffy photographed for a feature in The Sunday Times.
