
Duffy’s 1973 photo of David Bowie for the Aladdin Sane album became his iconic look, dubbed the “Mona Lisa of pop.” Commissioned by Bowie’s manager to be “expensive,” the album cover used a costly dye-transfer process. Duffy drew the famous lightning bolt on Bowie’s face, with makeup by Pierre Laroche. Airbrush artist Philip Castle, under Duffy’s instruction, added the water symbol to Bowie’s clavicle - a detail Bowie found “quite sweet.”
